Work schedule and required travel:

As required to perform duties. Usually Monday through Saturday 6:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Weekend and extended hours required during growing season as well as reoccurring travel to Coachella, CA, Yuma, AZ and Mexico during the winter months.

SUMMARY

The Organic Production Manager-Agronomist oversees all in-house and outside production of organic crops for Ocean Mist Farms. Successful person will follow crops from planting until harvest and will assist with communication of product quality and volumes to sales during crop harvest.

SCOPE OF ROLE

    • Strive for the most consistent high quality organic products daily providing our customers with unsurpassed value and useable product.

    • Build year-round planting schedules with the correct weekly flows given sales parameters of all Ocean Mist Farms organic crops.

    • Assist growers in block choices given the desired crop to be planted. Monitor and ensure the best quality possible ground/bed preparation before planting.

    • Ensure all plantings go in on time with in-house and outside growers.

    • Conduct regular field checks during growth cycle and determine/suggest what types of cultural activities need to happen next.

    • Develop a written fertility and crop protection program for each crop grown. The goals of these programs should be to avoid diseases and insects and keeping the product looking as close to conventional as possible.

    • Provide weekly reports of upcoming crop quality and volumes to sales team and VP of Production.

    • Provide three-week quality and volume projections of upcoming crops.

    • Work with quality assurance and sales teams on product exceptions and product defects given current industry conditions and standards. This would be done proactively as issues take place in the field.

    • Work with harvesting team to make sure pack and product quality are the best possible. Work with sales team in order to determine what is feasible to pack and when we should pass substandard product.

    • Develop a written transitional organic ground plan taking into consideration costs to grower and the fairest method to share these expenses.

    • Work with VP of Production on securing and increasing Ocean Mist Farms organic ground base in desirable geographic areas.

 

SKILLS, ABILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

The qualified candidate will be an effective advocate of the Ocean Mist Farms label and organization by always striving to produce and ship the highest quality, most desirable product while striving to achieve the lowest cost per unit. At all times, maintain a professional image that supports company values, image and goals. A strong work ethic, unsurpassed integrity, confidentiality, punctuality, and job dedication is essential to be successful in this position. The incumbent will work to ensure a cohesive and positive team environment.

    • BS or MS degree in Agronomy, Production Ag or related degree required.

    • Five years of prior experience in organic vegetable production is required.

    • Relocation to the desert is required, typically from September to February. Must be willing and able to travel regularly where organic crops are being grown.

    • Bilingual in English/Spanish is required at a fluent level. This includes reading, writing and conversing.

    • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; attention to detail and detail oriented a must.

    • Office equipment to be used (not inclusive list): telephone, computer keyboard, photocopy machine, fax, scanner, postage meter and other clerical and office equipment.

    • Must have a valid CA driver’s license.
